My flirt with mohair

My flirt with mohair

For some reason mohair is something I have always admired at a distance. I have knitted a cardigan once in white mohair, but my memory mostly focus on how I was covered in white left over yarn after knitting… but strolling through Copenhagen I visited Wilfert’s and came across this fabulous Super Kid Mohair produced by ggh GmbH, colour 077.

I was tempted by the prospect of a new sweater, I was just not sure of the design yet. I was convinced through that with this yarn, inspiration would come and I was willing to wait even though that could be years…2 days was all it took before I was knitting away.

First I decided on the stitch Diagonal knot – knitted on a circular needle- number of stitches multipliable with 3.

The stitch:

Row 1: knit
Row 2: knit 3 stitches together (leave stitches on needle) yarn over and than purl back through the stitches again (now you slip stitches from needle), repeat until no stitches are left
Row 3: knit
Row 4: knit 1, knit 1, knit 3 stitches together (leave stitches on needle) yarn over and than purl back through the stitches again (now you slip stitches from needle), repeat until no stitches are left
Row 5: knit
Row 6: knit 1, knit 3 stitches together (leave stitches on needle) yarn over and than purl back through the stitches again (now you slip stitches from needle), repeat until no stitches are left

My sweater is knitted from the top down – increasing only in two places so there would be a line over the chest and the back – see next picture for details.

Trying to transfer some good vibes

Trying to transfer some good vibes

The knitted garment in this bag was part of a sweater I wore a lot when I was 15 years old. I have had some nice times in this sweater, and I thought it a shame that its good vibes should be stored away in my closet. This kind of sweater is fairly common in Denmark and was especially popular 35 – 20 years ago and is called an Icelandic sweater. Rumour has it that the Faeroe Island also can claim some of glory…

What do you do when you want to knit your husband a sweater and you would like him to wear it when it is finished? … well one way is to give him influence over the design. Result a red line that is made with the intarsia technique. I do not like to knit with this technique at all, because I feel that the knitting looses some of its flow, but I liked the design and hoped that it would make my husband use the sweater. It worked!

The cat in the picture – is our lovely cat Petersen… taking pictures of the cat is one way of making him pose for a picture :)

The good thing about sweaters for children is that you can try out a pattern without too much work. I do not belong to the knitters who think that because it is for a child and the child will soon grow out of the sweater there is no need to make it complicated…quick to unravel and try out new stuff if you are not happy about the result.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is fantastic. The knitting shop De Afstap is always nice (www.afstap.nl). The shop is central and if you are in town it is a nice place to visit.

But what is of special interest are the knitted garments locals are wearing…. This sweater is knitted by Harry’s mother, but the design is Harry’s…
